Mental Catalog: The evolving collection of personal do's and don'ts that informs what you add to your closet/beauty regimen and what you edit out of your closet/beauty regimen.
As you try new things, you amend your mental catalog; making notes of what things work and what things don't: from brands that fit you, to silhouettes that suit you, to haircuts and colors that flatter, to beauty products that work.
The more you try --> the more information you add to your mental catalog --> the more confident you become in how your look/dress
Even when you try something that turns out terribly (clothing or a haircut, or a new shade of lipstick) --> you're still adding valuable info to your mental catalog
The only way you lose then, is if you don't try new things. Because then you're working with a small and outdated collection of data.
